The Galapagos Welcomes Celebrity Flora

Updates from around the fleet.

Celebrity Flora sails in May 2019. Celebrity Flora sails in May 2019.

It’s a one-of-a-kind ship for a one-of-a-kind destination. Celebrity Flora, the first ship ever built specifically for the Galapagos, has been purposefully designed with the delicate archipelago in mind. Lutoff-Perlo explained that the destination and its pristine environment influenced every design decision made along the way. The vessel seamlessly blends modern luxury, sustainability, and design.

Flora’s most noticeable feature, the outward-facing layout, gives guests 360-degree views of the island. The heavy focus on glass and windows creates a connection, a oneness, with the environment from anywhere on the ship. And all of the suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows that bring the daylight into the living and bedroom areas. When it comes to sustainability, all of the fabrics are organic and all of the furniture has been designed and manufactured by local craftsmen and furniture producers.

Lutoff-Perlo said that Celebrity wanted to make a statement with Flora that it is their intention to preserve the Galapagos’ pristine ecosystem. Therefore, the energy-efficient ship has a 15-percent reduction in fuel consumption, equivalently fewer air emissions, and includes anchorless technology that maintains the ship’s position while protecting the sensitive sea floor. Celebrity will reduce the need for plastics with in-room water filtration stations and by converting seawater and AC condensation into pure, fresh water. Any materials that can be recycled, reused, or donated will be as part of a strict waste management system.

And when it comes to the on-shore experience, an island naturalist will accompany guests snorkeling and exploring in order to answer questions, explain what they’re seeing, and serve as the guest’s go-to person for information in the region. Because a visit to the Galapagos can be a rigorous adventure, Flora has been designed with rejuvenating onboard venues such as the Vista, Discovery Lounge, open-air stargazing platform, and more.

Both Celebrity and Flora have earned praise from the director of the Galapagos National Park for their commitment to the conservation of the Galapagos environment, and from Ecuador’s Minister of Tourism for offering cutting-edge technology and high-quality sustainable tourism.
