Just Say Om

Meditation is the 21st-century way to get some Zen.

Woman Meditating

With a deluge of everyday life stresses—bills, working late, not getting enough sleep, that fight with your friend or partner—it can feel pretty difficult to find any sense of peace. And so, meditation for the modern day continues to hold a top trending spot in the app stores. Downloads are inexpensive or free, super accessible, and a great way to tap into your inner yogi. Here are a few of our favorites.

Headspace

What’s not to like about a soothing British man guiding you through different meditations? Headspace provides a ton of options in terms of length and themes (fear of flying? Check. Stressful commute? Check.). The first sessions are free, then monthly subscriptions run around $8 to $13.

Calm

According to the app, “Calm can change your life.” You’ll get access to master classes, bedtime stories, breathing guides, exclusive music, body programs for stretching and mindful movement, and more. The first week is free, followed by a $60 yearly charge.

Smiling Mind

Free to use and 100 percent not-for-profit, at Smiling Mind they believe access to mindfulness and mental health tools are for everyone. You’ll start by rating how you feel, then go into the meditation. The more you do it, the more options you’ll unlock, with programs like sports, workplace options, and mindfulness.

Insight Timer

Another freebie, this is a great choice for those who like variety. With over 4,500 guided meditations and access to tons of music for tapping into your highest chakras, the only challenge is knowing where to start. Spend some time perusing, then customize your experience like a pro.
