Grenada’s Beaches and Reefs
The best of Grenada’s 45 beaches can be found on the island’s southwestern coast, about a 10-minute drive from St. George’s. The water taxis at the pier offer quick and easy transportation between the harbor and Grand Anse Beach, often heralded as one of the finest strips of sand in the Caribbean. The two-mile stretch of coastline is lined with resort hotels, restaurants, and beachside bars; and the placid, clear waters provide excellent conditions for an array of water activities.
The governmental environmental protection mandate extends off the coast, where the scenery is equally stunning. Guests can explore the underwater paradise during one of the many sailing or snorkeling excursions. To see the sea but not get wet, book a glass-bottom boat tour or a whale-watching expedition. While there’s no guarantee with nature, there is a 95 percent chance of seeing dolphins and a 70 percent chance of spotting whales during the thrilling tour.
The waters surrounding Grenada boast more than 50 dive sites, including reefs, wrecks, and walls, most of which are within 15 minutes of the various dive shops. Whether you’re a novice or an expert, the waters offer excitement for all skill levels. Grenada’s extensive reef formations are full of tropical fish, octopuses, and sea horses. More than 65 works of art await divers beneath the surface in Molinere Bay. Part of the National Marine Park, Grenada’s Underwater Sculpture Park is located two miles north of St. George’s. The latest installation is an underwater bench designed by Grenadian architect Bryan Bullen. The sculptures provide a new base for sea life to flourish within the protected waters of the bay.
