Chankanaab National Park. Cozumel Chankanaab National Park. Cozumel

Cozumel’s southernmost point is designated as part of the Punta Sur Ecological Reserve, a sanctuary for iguanas, giant turtles, and more than 200 species of birds. The nearby Colombia Lagoon offers shelter for many of the island’s endangered endemic species. The park’s Celarain Lighthouse has one of the best views of the relatively flat island.

For some real adventures on land, sign up for an excursion through Cozumel’s seldom-explored inland jungle. Drive or ride shotgun on a fully automatic two-person Xrail vehicle through off-road trails on the way to the island’s exotic Jade Caverns. Or, navigate an ATV into
the jungle and discover… a chewing-gum camp? Yes, that’s right: chewing gum. In the early 20th century, Cozumel’s abundant zapote trees were a source for chicle, a substance used to make chewing gum.

Golf lovers will be pleased to discover that the gorgeous Cozumel Country Club is only 10 minutes outside San Miguel. The 18-hole, par-72 championship golf course was designed by the prestigious design firm Nicklaus Design Group. In 2006, the club became Mexico’s first golf course to be designated as a certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. The fairways were built around native trees, mangroves, and marshlands, so it’s not unusual for blue crabs, iguanas, raccoons, and birds to be spotted from the greens.

Explore the archaeological ruins and relics of the walled city of Tulum. After, relax at a private beach club on Mexico’s Mayan Riviera.
