Very early in life, Kelly Hoppen turned her passion for interiors into a lifelong career that has earned her some of the world’s highest accolades such as MBE, Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, issued by the Queen.

Her renowned and evolving style is defined by clean lines and neutral tones blended with warmth and opulence. Celebrities and jet setters seek her out for her taupe touches. Television audiences follow her on BBC’s Dragon’s Den and QVC. Readers find her on the pages of her nine design books.

Though she “never recommends to follow trends of the moment because they can be quite dating to an interior,” she did share some sage design advice with us.

Design in 2018

“…will be about the exploration of color. Neutral and pastel-type tones have been around for so long now that I think the new year will bring an appreciation for loud, bright pieces that really make a statement in the home. Wallpaper has become SO popular after the last few years; it’s so versatile and can be used in virtually any room. I really believe wallpaper is a trend that will stick around for a while.”

Lighting

“[It] makes or breaks an interior. Without the correct lighting even the most expensive and well-considered decorating scheme can appear flat and uncomfortable. I would say completely ban downlighters. They are the most unflattering bulbs. You want wall washers, uplighters, pendant lights, and lighting in shadow gaps to complement the room and space. Of course, handpicking the perfect statement chandelier is always a plus as well.”

Finishing Touches & Accent Pieces

“Freestanding mirrors with massive frames are great statement pieces and really open up a room. A statement art piece is also an incredible find and wonderful for an interior; my art collection is very special to me and has taken years to build, with numerous pieces still in storage. Use your art, switch it with seasons. If you’re looking for something smaller, try finishing off your look by bringing a bit of nature in the home. I love organic trees that grow indoors, which add a little life to your interior. My favorite at the moment are bonsai trees.

Adding additional lighting or a fresh neutral paint color can create a feeling of luxury in every space. Switching up accessories such as cushions or art works can make a big difference, and if chosen correctly, can add a refined look to any space. Three things to keep in mind when designing a space are: texture, color, and proportion. They maintain harmony and cohesiveness within a space.”

Inspiration

“…should come from a place of comfort and what makes you most happy; mine comes from travel, people, and just general daily life! Markets are a great source to find beautiful one-off pieces for your home, and of course you can now have pieces that I designed in your home. I also love Pinterest. I think it’s such a wonderful source to help generate creativity and design.”
