Charting Sea Change

As a cruise line that believes in opening up the world—from sailing beyond borders to championing social change—Celebrity Cruises has been putting its core values into action with appointments and programs that promote acceptance, equality, and progress.

Last August, Captain Nathaly Albán became the first female seafarer in cruise industry history to navigate the Galapagos. The Ecuadorian native with 12 years’ experience sailing in the region continues the brand’s dedication to advancing the role of women in leadership positions. Her appointment follows that of Celebrity Summit’s Captain Kate McCue. “Empowering strong women and elevating them to deserved leadership roles is a cause that is close to my heart…” explained Lutoff-Perlo.

Building on that, Celebrity announced another first in cruise industry history: recruiting female bridge officers from a West African country through a new partnership with Ghana’s Regional Maritime University. Cadet Nicholine Tifuh Azirh joined Celebrity Equinox as the first crew member from the program, and as Lutoff-Perlo explained, symbolizes hope for women around the world who dream of working in a very male-dominated industry.

Celebrity’s progressive news in cruise continued with the announcement of legal same-sex weddings at sea. And in January, it celebrated the historic first ceremony when Francisco Vargas and Benjamin Gray became the first same-sex couple to be legally married at sea on a major cruise line. Lisa Lutoff-Perlo said they are paving the way for couples around the world to know that their love and commitment is to be celebrated equally, and that everyone is welcome on board a Celebrity cruise. Gray commented, “We are humbled to follow the trailblazers in the LGBTQ+ community who paved the way for us.”
